Modern living presents a lot of stress and many of us are continuously on the lookout for something healthy that can provide us with peace of mind and soothe frayed nerves.  While Yoga has been around for a long time and many people have started practicing it, the curiosity about what it actually is and how it manages to offer succor to its practitioners has always engaged the thought process of the very people practicing this divine form of activity.  Though the physical and mental benefits are all too well known, Yoga is generally associated with a lot of stretching and difficult body poses and this has also prevented certain people from engaging themselves in this exercise.  Yes, Yoga does involve a lot of stretching and body poses, but there is much more to it, which we will try and understand in this article.

Yoga originated in the holy land of India and it refers to the communion between the body and the mind.  The objective behind Yoga is to first create a harmonious balance between the physical body and the mind and through that achieve the exalted status of nirvana or self enlightenment.  This is obtained through a combination of movements, controlled breathing, relaxation, meditation and physical body poses or ‘asana’.  Through Yoga, you can attain a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

The physical poses help the body to achieve stability and also calm the dithering mind.  The body tendons, joints and ligaments experience greater lubrication, lending them suppleness and renewed vitality.  Studies have time and again proved that Yoga provides total workout to all body parts, as it gently massages even the internal parts of the body.  Once these internal glands and organs get stimulated through the various postures and breathing discipline of Yoga, they get revitalized and begin to function more effectively, thereby preventing the onset of disease.  The various asana if performed under correct guidance have been known to cure chronic back and even arthritis related problems as these asana acts specifically on the muscles in a gentle but effective manner.  The regular practice of Yoga will ensure that a person truly experiences great and positive changes in his physical and mental framework.

The physical activity through asana is just one facet of this wonderful and unique gift to mankind.  Yoga teaches you the art of meditation and the correct method of breathing.  These breathing exercises called ‘pranayams’ enable a person to diffuse stress and pushes it out of his system.  They increase the holding capacity of the lungs and prevent allergens from invading the system.  Many chronic ailments like hypertension have been brought under control through regular practice of meditation and the best thing about it is the absolute absence of any side effects.

The most wonderful aspect of Yoga is the fact that the positive changes on both body and mind become visible and apparent over a period of time.  Yoga, by virtue of its tremendous variety of asana and breathing techniques enable a person to take to it in a manner that is not too obtrusive and he can make progress starting with the milder asana to the more intense ones.
